2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information you provide
- Mobile number — if you choose to log in via OTP for account sync.
- Language and location preferences — state and district you select for personalised news.
- Notification preferences — whether you enable breaking news alerts.
- Support communications — messages you send to us by email or phone.
- Comments — text you post on a news story. Comments are public to other app users and are linked to your pseudonymous device ID.
- Citizen reports (“మీరే రిపోర్టర్”) — if you choose to send us news: your name, phone number and place (all optional), the news text, and a photo or video you choose to attach. Contact details are seen only by our editors to verify the report and are never published.
- Poll votes and app ratings — your poll choice and any star rating or feedback text you send, linked to your device ID.
2.2 Information collected automatically
- Device identifier — a pseudonymous device ID used to sync likes, saved articles, and notification subscriptions across sessions.
- FCM push token — if you enable push notifications (via Google Firebase Cloud Messaging).
- App interaction data — articles viewed, liked, saved, or reported (linked to device ID or account).
- Technical data — app version, platform (Android/iOS), general network information, and crash/diagnostic logs where enabled.
2.3 Information we do not collect
- We do not require access to your contacts, photo gallery, microphone, or precise GPS location for core news reading. The app opens your photo gallery only when you choose to attach a photo or video to a citizen report.
- Stories you save for offline reading are stored on your phone only.
- We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU/EEA without parental consent).
3. How We Use Your Information
- Deliver news feed content in your selected language and district.
- Sync likes, saved articles, and preferences across devices when logged in.
- Send push notifications for breaking news when you opt in.
- Operate, secure, and improve the Service (including fraud prevention and abuse reporting).
- Comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.
4. AI-Generated Content Disclosure
NIPUN NEWS uses artificial intelligence (including Google Gemini) to summarise news articles from publicly available sources and to generate translations into Indian regional languages. AI-generated summaries and translations:
- Are produced automatically and may contain errors or omissions.
- Do not replace the original publisher reporting; source attribution and original links are provided where available.
- Are not personalised advice, legal, medical, or financial guidance.
We do not use your personal data to train third-party AI models. Article text sent for summarisation/translation is processed solely to deliver news content to you.
5. Push Notifications (Firebase)
If you enable breaking news alerts, we use Google Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) to deliver notifications to your device. This involves:
- Storing your FCM token and language/location preferences on our servers.
- Google processing device tokens according to Google Firebase Privacy Policy.
You may disable notifications at any time in the app Settings or your device system settings. Disabling notifications stops new push delivery but may not immediately delete stored tokens until the next sync cycle.
6. Legal Bases for Processing (GDPR / UK GDPR)
Where GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we process personal data on the following bases:
- Consent — push notifications, optional login, and optional marketing (if ever offered).
- Contract — providing the Service you request.
- Legitimate interests — security, analytics, service improvement, and fraud prevention, balanced against your rights.
- Legal obligation — compliance with applicable laws.
7. India Compliance
We comply with applicable Indian laws including the Information Technology Act, 2000, the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act), as applicable to our operations.
- We publish this Privacy Policy and Terms on our website and make them accessible in the app.
- You may contact our Grievance Officer at info@nipunindia.com for privacy-related complaints.
- We process personal data for lawful purposes with reasonable security safeguards.
8. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell your personal information. We may share data with:
- Google Firebase / Google Cloud — push messaging and infrastructure.
- Google Gemini API — automated summarisation and translation of news text (not your account profile).
- Hosting providers — servers used to operate the Service (data stored in India where practicable).
- Law enforcement or regulators — when required by valid legal process.
9. International Data Transfers
Some service providers (including Google) may process data outside India or your country of residence. Where required, we implement appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or equivalent mechanisms recognised under applicable law.
10. Data Retention
- Account and preference data — retained while your account is active and for a reasonable period thereafter.
- Device interaction data — retained as needed for sync and analytics, typically up to 24 months unless longer retention is required by law.
- FCM tokens — removed or refreshed when you disable notifications or uninstall the app.
- Support emails — retained as needed to resolve inquiries and meet legal obligations.
- Comments — kept while the story is available or until you or our editors remove them.
- Citizen reports — kept as editorial records; request deletion via the contact methods below.
11. Security
We use industry-standard measures including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), access controls, and secure credential management. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of personal data we hold about you.
- Correction — request correction of inaccurate data.
- Deletion — request deletion of your account and associated data.
- Withdraw consent — for processing based on consent (e.g., push notifications).
- Object / restrict — object to or restrict certain processing under GDPR.
- Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format where applicable.
- Complaint — lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (EU/EEA/UK users).
To exercise these rights, email info@nipunindia.com with subject “Privacy Request”. We may verify your identity before responding. We aim to respond within 30 days (or 15 days for grievances under Indian rules where applicable).
13. Google Play Data Safety
This Policy supports disclosures in the Google Play Data safety form, including: device identifiers, app activity (likes, saves, poll votes, ratings), user-generated content (comments; citizen reports with optional name, phone number, place, photos and videos), optional phone number for login, and push notification tokens. Data is encrypted in transit; you may request deletion via the contact methods above.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with an updated “Last updated” date. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance.
